My Projects: Mojave Kaftan

EDIT: Please visit my new site ATELIER DE LAPORTE for sewing and knitting workshops and all things handmade.

My Projects is my place to share my craft as I attempt to make a handmade wardrobe.

I dug deep in the Seamwork archives to find this kaftan style dress/cover-up. I predict the comeback of the kaftan and I am obsessed with beach wear. Even if I only go seaside about less than 5 times a year! Dress for the job you want, they say! I finished the Mojave this past spring and finally got to the beach to wear it!

I chose a soft lightweight cotton from India with a delightful block print! It's a soft creamy pale pink background with black printing on it. Perfectly lightweight for the beach!

This pattern was my first foray into the world of digital patterns. The design is simple with a little bit of shirring to add interest. A great fast project- which is exactly what you want a kaftan to be! I love the deep V in the front!

I'd definitely make this in the next size down in a light linen to wear as a dress. For a beach cover up I love the looseness of this one. It's super light and breezy. I made the size 8.

I'll definitely be back to the beach before summer is over and I'm looking forward to wearing my kaftan again!

My next project I'll be sharing is a beach bag. Can you tell I have the shore on my mind? What are you currently working on? What is your favorite Seamwork pattern?
