My Projects: Ikat Beach Bag

EDIT: Please visit my new site ATELIER DE LAPORTE for sewing and knitting workshops and all things handmade.

My Projects is my place to share my craft as I attempt to make a handmade wardrobe.

I hate to bombard you with two My Projects posts back to back but summer is flying by and this one is time sensitive. I certainly haven't been to the beach as often as I'd like but I did manage to make this large tote bag in time to use it as my designated beach bag.

This tote bag fits everything. I love the large size and rounded zipper top. Did I mention pockets? One large pocket in the front and an extra large /wide pocket on the back. Inside I made three interior pockets. It was hard to get a shot of those. I can fit my towels, sunscreen, all the essentials and then some!

I chose a medium weight cotton Ikat print from India in denim blue and white pattern. I used blue cotton duck canvas for the bottom and straps. These straps are super sturdy! To give the bag strength and a professional shape, I not only interfaced the lining but also put in a middle layer of canvas. I couldn't be more happy with the results - the bag feels and looks store bought. Exactly what I want to achieve with my handmade wardrobe.

For the lining I used a quirky bird print fabric I found randomly one day shopping in the garment district here in New York City. I love the whimsy of it!

Pattern: Senna Tote by LBG Studio. Available for download at Craftsy. Easy to use, great instructions that lead to a quality product. Highly recommend.

Ikat Fabric from Vedah Designs. Ships from India- fast but give yourself time. I also made pillows out of this fabric and have a bit left. I may make a clutch.

9 oz. Canvas (both the blue and interior in white) from I actually find it hard to find great canvas and this is exactly what I was looking for.

Bird print lining: as mentioned- from my stash. Found at a random shop in the garment district.

Well, I'm ready for another beach day! Let's squeeze as many as we can in. I hope you are enjoying your summer!
